Twenty Thousand Years Ago
A boy without a name
Went searching in a cave.
Empty, save the red paint.
Hand-prints repeating, making
Patterns both abstract and real.
_______
No human figures painted,
Unless you count the hands.
No, but the human spirit
Shines, immortal on the walls.
Why then did that fiend say,
“Those handprints are not real at all.”
Why so eager to stifle
Our minuscule achievements?
_______
“Nothing is real.
“Everything you think’s a lie.
“I am exceedingly wealthy;
“Coincidentally,
“I’d like to go to outer space.”
Maybe it’s my lack of funds,
But I cannot sympathize
With those desires.
_______
I have peered into the mire
And learned that we
Are easily fooled.
Never by Majesty, Grace, or Beauty,
But by the pride in men
That says:
_______
“All life leading to me
Was impossibly stupid,
All that shall follow
Will likewise be stupid.
So drop your Love,
Common sense, and
Most of all, your
Wonder.
And follow me.”
